question 2 rough
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Gender Within our opening our film only represented the female representations, as our characters are al females. Some may argue that this instantly makes the film aimed to an audience of teenage girls, rather than mixed genres. However because of the subject issue and genre of thriller I believe that the begging is suitable for both genders. Many Thrillers can begin with just female representations as it automatically can make them look weak and vulnerable, if this atmosphere is created correctly then the beginning can make the females seem like an object, or presented in this isolated way, which relates to the thriller genre. For instance the award winning thriller “Taken” starts off with typical vulnerable females, however the subject and genre of the film is a thriller which is targeted to both genders. Some may argue that we challenged the thriller conventions, in the fact how thrillers are seen to be mixed genre, how our opening only features females making the male roles and characters seem uninteresting and irrelevant.
Stereotypes there are mainly two stereotypical characters presented which is Charley who is seen to be the stalker, villain of the plot making her seem dangerous and someone who the audience are aware of, making her look suspicious to the audience. The other stereotype presented are the roles that both Harriet and Chloe play; the weak, targeted, vulnerable typical young teenage girls. Both characters are presented within this stereotype because of the innocents betrayed, mainly by the fact how the audience sympathies with them because of the danger and suicide act presented and labelled to them. Some may also argue that the stereotype of Charley’s character was challenged as usually the villain Is played by a male role rather than a female. However I disagree with this idea and think that Charley’s character clearly identifies the stereotype of someone who is dangerous and the Villain of the clip, because of her attitude and costume presented. Which is seen to be almost quite masculine and similar to the male role of villains presented within the thriller genre.
Age and ethnicity
The characters are all the same age of 17yrs old, we wanted our film to be aimed at teenagers of our own audience/age as we from our own experience and preferences know what is gripping and suitable for this targeted audience. Therefore in order to appeal to this audience the ages of the characters need to be around our own age, so we could relate to the clip, plot and costumes needed for it to be successful. Making our opening characters teenagers instantly suggests who the film is aimed at, which may not appeal to an older audience of adults. This in within the film industry would be leaving out a large audience, therefore would have to be made gripping and suitable for the teenage audience to make up for this loss in the market. The problem with using characters our own age was making Charley’s character seem realistic as we wanted her to seem dangerous when teenagers of this age are seen to be too young and vulnerable, this was another thriller convention that we suggestively challenged as well. The use of technology is current and seen to be upcoming, which is also stereotyped to be associated and related to the younger generation. The three Girls presented are all white, British, we aimed to target the typical British drama audience and feeling presented to the clip hence the reason why the characters are all British. Our locations and costumes are all again associated with the British stereotype for instance the cold, gloomy weather presented, and the current poplar fashion trends presented at the moment which teenage British are into.

Harriet Spalding Question 2:
ReplyDelete1) Near the beginning of your response you say…..Some may argue that this instantly makes the film aimed to an audience of teenage girls, rather than mixed genres. This doesn’t make sense.
Delete this sentence because you will be discussing audience in Question 4. And because the film focuses on a girl’s deviant behaviour it is most likely that your potential target audience will be 15-17 year old ethnically white British females . This is the group most at risk of cyber bullying.
2) Delete….”Many thrillers “ ………to …… “which relates to the thriller genre”. Instead say something like … the representation of women as victims is a convention of thrillers, for example in Once Upon a time in American (the opening) Eve is gunned down within minutes… Then Harriet move onto you’re your comments about “Taken” .
3) Delete from…..The characters are all the same age of 17yrs old, we wanted our film to be aimed at teenagers of our own audience/age as we from our own experience and preferences know what is gripping and suitable for this targeted audience……. To…………this loss in the market. ……. Because this is for questions 4 and appeal to target audience for Question 5.
4) You say…….. Our locations and costumes are all again associated with the British stereotype for instance the cold, gloomy weather presented, and the current poplar fashion trends presented at the moment which teenage British are into………… Harriet stereotypes is a term used for people not places. Instead say the …cold, gloomy weather represents a traditional view of British weather whilst also adding to the sense of menace and melancholy in our thriller opening...
Instead say something like....…. our film represents teenage girls as predatory and isolated whilst exploring the dangers of social network sites such as……. The cyber bully’s costume design is easily recognisable thus making the potential audience identify with the character and the plot ; she is not over glamorised as a traditional femme fatale (deviant woman highly sexualised) (add a screen shot from Gilda) and another noir thriller for example "La Confidential" search Google images.
5) Paragraphing! As advised look at the way Meg Garratt organised her responses in Archives Year 2014-2014.
6) Add screen shots from your thriller as examples with screen shots
7) USE SPELL CHECK FOR TYPING/SPELLING ERRORS.
At present Level3 (Cish) but with revisions and a organised as advised this could be Level 3+ or Level 4.
By the way your response is intelligent, this is a difficult question. Try to aim for an A grade.
