Q1 rough draft In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

  1. I've had a quick look and setting out is good. For raising grade have a look at definitions of the thriller genre near the beginning of your yellow booklet.

Make sure you haven't left out any aspects, for example the use of flash back (I think in your edit this is in black and white) thus referencing iconic film noir thrillers such as The Third Man or "Mildred Pierce". The flashback of the girl's body on the bed also references Eva's body on the bed in the opening to "Once Upon a Time in America". Then add screen shot.

The more appropriate inter textual references you make (and you can reference your case studies because a different examiner assess your research. So go through case studies again in case you have missed an important inter textual reference.

  2. 1) Harriet note the point I made a few days ago re flashbacks. Thus you could add a slide:

    2) Using the conventions of noir thrillers such as the opening to Kill Bill 1 then discuss your flash backs which indicate the conventions of a noir thriller.

    3) Characters and costume design. Say we challenged the conventions of thrillers such as Pulp Fiction and Reservoir dogs by focusing the action on the deviant behaviour of a teenage school girl. Much like Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" where two school girls brutally murder one of the girl's mothers in a Christchurch Park in the middle of the day. (Screen shot of murder in this film)

    4) Where you discuss the under pass and the reference to Essex boys. Start by saying we used the generic convention of claustrophobic enclosed spaces in order to establish the genre of the film.

    5) At the end of your answer say something like .... we used the conventions for the opening to a film with the use of the title of the film (screen shot from your film) and credits (name of actors) and ended with a cliff hanger (screen shot from your film).

With these revisions I suggest this very through and well organised response you could achieve Level 4, at present confident Level 3 (grade B)
